Through Carlo Fornara’s landscapes

My father was a factory worker, my mother a farmer. They would have liked me to become a surveyor or a town clerk, like my grandfather. They didn’t want to send me far away to study so they allowed me to attend the painting school in S. Maria Maggiore in the Vigezzo Valley, overcoming their strong opposition to this profession that had already become my passion.

Carlo Fornara

The natural beauty of the Vigezzo Valley, which attracts tourists to this day, has inspired dynasties of artists in the past. The “Amongst Carlo Fornara’s Landscapes” itinerary, offered by the Rossetti Valentini School of Fine Arts Foundation, allows visitors to visit some important places in the “Valley of the Painters” between the school’s historic headquarters in Santa Maria Maggiore and Prestinone, where one of its best-known students, Carlo Fornara (1871-1968), was born and lived. The trail is accessible all year round on minor roads and pedestrian pathways. It takes visitors on an evocative journey through today’s landscapes and those that were painted in the open-air in the past. The ten panels along the trail provide insight into some aspects of the artist’s mindset and his works. Thanks to the QR code on each panel, it’s possible to download the trail and access new material on the Foundation’s website. Enjoy the trail!
